HYBRID JOBS YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED

Hybridity comes in two forms.

The first is where parts of existing words are mashed together, also known as a portmanteau. (e.g. Biogeochemical engineer)

The second is where entirely new terms are created for something that defies conventional language. (e.g. Social Media Influencer)

At first, hybrid terms are neologisms (new words) in our vocabulary that haven't been widely adopted. Eventually, the newness rubs off, and they become commonly accepted in our vocabulary.

This is the cycle of hybridity. It starts as something obscure (a combination of two or more things), and then it becomes normalized, widespread, and taken for granted.

EXAMPLES OF HYBRID ROLES

Here are a BUNCH of examples of hybrid roles that already exist in the workplace. In fact, they're hiding in plain sight.

The examples I've gathered represent the convergence of multiple divergent disciplines or areas of expertise in one role.

These roles require a worker who is capable of working at the intersection BETWEEN multiple identities and can create relationships that add new, unforeseen value to the market.

This is VERY DIFFERENT from being a jack-of-all-trades. There is no separation between the identities because they merge into an altogether new, hybrid identity.

Job postings, degrees and fields of study exist for the following examples. (Just search online...or on LinkedIn)

1) Biogeochemical Engineer= Biology + Geology + Chemical Engineering

2) Agroecosystems Scientist= Agrology + Ecology + Ecosystems

3) BizDevOps Director= Business + Development + Operations

4) Metaverse Manager= (I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one, but it's hybrid)

5) Fusion Chef= Prepares contrasting culinary traditions into a single dish

6) Integrative Health Practitioner= Combines appropriate therapies, both conventional and complementary, to facilitate healing and optimal health (including ayurveda, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, functional medicine, and others)

7) Biomimicry Design Architect= Designing art, architecture, fashion or technology that looks like or functions like elements in nature

8) Aesthetic Engineer or Ecologist= Aesthetic appreciation and philosophy of the world (built and natural) + Ecology

9) Growth Designer= Marketing + Product + Sales + Design + Engineering

10) Transmedia Artist or Storyteller= brings together different media to effect various kinds of interactions and experiences with its users, audiences and institutions and publishes across multiple platforms

11) Wellness Director= Program Design + Business + Mental and Physical Health
